RM of Oakdale’s story
The Rural Municipality of Oakdale No. 320 sits in the west-central part of Saskatchewan, close to the Alberta boundary. It incorporated as a rural municipality on December 13, 1909, during the years when the surrounding district was first being organized.
Schooling followed quickly. Eureka School District was set up in 1908 and Bonn in 1909, and over the next dozen years more one-room school districts appeared across the municipality, including Hopedale, Driver, Elm Point, Beaufield, Coleville, Avoca, Algoma and Ashford. Most of these were folded into the Kindersley School Division in the 1940s, and since 2006 the area has been part of the Sun West School Division.
The railway also served the area. A Canadian National Railway branch line, the Dodsland Branch, served Beaufield, Coleville and Driver, while another, the Outlook-Kerrobert Branch, served Ermine. Today the village of Coleville lies within the municipality, and the RM office is located there. Beaufield (Ednaburg) and Driver remain as localities, and Highways 21 and 307 run through the area.
